#alivegurlmudik: Black on Black on Black

Black Barn Coffee

Let me tell you a little story: the last time I was in Surabaya with my sister, there is a vintage store that we wanted to visit—it's Newton Store—but it was closed for renovation last time. Last May my friend Uli went there, recorded the experience on her instagram and I was so smitten with the insides. So I thought this time my Sis and I could give it another shot, since no announcement of their closing has been made recently. But, as soon as we got there, we saw that the place was closed yet again. Luckily, it turns out the area is used for small business by young entrepreneurs—including a barbershop, a coffee shop and a bakery. With the threat of rain, we decided to take cover at Black Barn Coffee, which has such a cozy and intimate atmosphere with cool, edgy touch to it. Unfortunately, I was fasting, so my Sis was the only who could order—plus, she already had lunch in advance—and she tried their Hazelnut Latte. It was rather nice, she said, plus we both really enjoyed the interior and exterior. I love that the inside has a bit of steampunk, wiccan feel to it, while the outside has this hippie, breezy vibe—clashing but strangely compliments each other.

Truth be told, I didn't come to Surabaya looking for places like this—Jakarta has them in plentiful already—but sometimes plans fall out. That day we had to get home rather quick too, so we didn't have time to find a new place for photos. Fortunately, my outfit matches the location very well, so it doesn't feel like such a weird change of plans—for me anyway. Also, it turns out we weren't the only ones taking outfit photos there—although we were the only ones equipped with a DSLR. We were all over the place and taking so long to get all the shots I needed/wanted, though, so in the end I felt really bad for only buying one beverage and decided to purchase mineral water and tried out their oreo brownies. The brownie turns out to be half the price I would normally get them in Jakarta—so much so that I considered snatching their carrot cake as well—and it doesn't taste half bad! This just goes to show that plans do fail, but you might end up finding gems like this.
