Lately, I've noticed a lot of people talk about impostor syndrome—like
Anna Akana,
Wong Fu and
Ali Abdal—and I can't deny that I've been through it too. I thought I'd talk about it
here, as I'm sure we've all been there. First of all, if you didn't know,
impostor—or imposter—syndrome is, basically, the belief that you have in your
mind that you are not good enough, whatever that may mean to you. In other
words, it makes you feel like a fraud, because you think everyone else thinks
you are better than you really are. Here's a little bit of fact for you:
more often than not, it's not true. This feeling can be very alienating and make us develop self-doubt, but the
truth is most people go through the same things—if not at the same time,
probably at some point in their lives. And this is my story with impostor
syndrome.
