Illustrators Arise: Julia Bereciartu

What's up, art enthusiasts? Are you good this lovely morning? No? Well, I hope this will cheer you up: it's time for this month's dose of Illustrators Arise. If you've never heard of it before, it is where I introduce my favourite illustrators from all over the world every month through an interview so you guys can read along and get to know them too. Are you psyched? Let's hope so! This month's special guest is a talented children's illustrator from Spain, a round of applause for Julia Bereciartu! As with most of the illustrators I've featured before, I found Julia first through tumblr and fell instantly in love with her incredibly neat, subtly colourful and jacked-up-on-ideas artworks. Julia - who defines herself as "an illustrator and crazy cat lady" - now lives in Madrid with her partner and her cat, Maggie.

Hi there, Julia! Why don’t we begin with how this all started? How did you delve into the world of illustrations and why?
I like thinking that instead of starting, I never stopped drawing. When I was a kid I would draw everywhere and anywhere, I was obsessed. All I wanted to be when I grew up was a painter, like the people who made my favorite children's books. Later, I grew into a super nerdy, awkward teen who read lots of comic books and manga. In that time, and spent the days trying to emulate my favorite characters, copying poses, hairstyles… trying to improve my abilities. However, it took me a lot of time to figure out I could make a living out of being an illustrator. After graduating from University I worked in advertising for a few years, doing small illustration gigs on the side, until I could establish as a full time freelance illustrator.

Did you go to an art school? If so, would you recommend it (art school in general) to anyone? If not, why didn’t you?
No, I never went to art school. Honestly, when I had to choose a career path, I didn't really know you could go and study illustration. Instead, I went to University to study a degree in Communications and Film, and afterwards I studied animation for a year. That's where something clicked in my mind and decided to pursue my childhood dream of being an illustrator.
I took some painting lessons when I was a teenager, but aside from that, I'm completely self taught. I learnt using watercolors with a book, and basically by trial and error. It's fun to make mistakes and experiment!  But sometimes I wish I had attended illustration school, I'm sure it would've taken me less time to figure some things out.

What materials do you usually use?
I like experimenting with new materials all the time, but when I paint I generally stick to a mix of watercolors and gouache. My favorite brand is Winsor & Newton, but the gouache is hard to find here in Spain, so I use the brand Talens instead, which is available almost anywhere. I draw with a Pentel 0.5 mechanical pencil, and always use hot pressed watercolor paper, as I like a very smooth texture. On the computer, I paint in Photoshop with some custom brushes, and also love Kyle's amazing brushes.

I notice that you seem to create watercolour illustrations for personal purposes and digital ones for work. Is there a reason behind this?

Well, when you're doing client work, you usually have a tight deadline, so it's always more convenient to work on the computer, since you can undo things and make multiple changes in no time. Aside from that, most of my professional work is targeted to teens and tweens, and the client usually asks for a more digital look. I would love to do more watercolors for work, though.

You’ve made a lot of illustrations for American Girl Magazine. How did this collaboration start and what are your thoughts on it?
Yeah, I've been collaborating with American Girl Magazine for already five years now, and it's been a huge pleasure! I got really lucky on this… a wonderful art director that worked there saw my work online, liked it and decided to offer me a small project. She doesn't work at American Girl anymore, but I'll be forever grateful to her for giving me a chance when I was a newbie.

Your illustrations always seem to have a story to tell. Do you ever consider writing an illustrated book of your own one day?
I have illustrated three books already, but none of them was narrative, and it's a challenge I really look forward to. It would be a dream come true to illustrate a children's book, for example. When I'm doing illustrations for fun, in my sketchbook, I always tend to tell little stories inside them. I play with little details and exchanges between characters that let you make up your own story about what's happening. But somehow I've never considered myself a storyteller. I guess I should challenge myself to write my own book.

Okay, now you’re working as a freelance illustrator. How do you manage your work schedule/time? Was it ever overwhelming?
I work from home, so it can be a little complicated to separate work and life, specially when I'm working on a big job like a book. In those periods, it can be a little overwhelming, I must admit. But I try doing my best to unplug at the end of the work day, get out of the house for a while and spend time with friends. I need that to maintain a healthy mind. Sometimes I consider renting a separate studio in a shared space, which would help on managing a work schedule. But at the same time, I love working from home. The fact that I can work in my pyjamas if I feel like it is pretty cool!

Aside from illustrations, you seem to have an apt for knitting. Would you ever combine the two together?
Yeah, I love knitting a lot. My grandma taught me the basics when I was a kid, but I only became obsessed a few years ago. It's very different from illustration, but at the same time they're both really creative activities. I really enjoy designing my own sweaters or hats, and creating pieces of clothing out of nowhere, it's a lot of fun with the bonus of being useful. I haven't been able to knit much this summer, it's been awfully hot in Madrid and well, wool and heat don't mix well. But I have plans to mix my illustration and knitting very soon, I want to design a pair of mittens, probably with something cat related.

How does the future look like for Julia Bereciartu?
The last few weeks have been exciting, as I recently published a new book with American Girl and a new toy with Djeco. And I'm currently negotiating two new possible projects that I really look forward to. Besides that, I hope the future brings new exciting work, lots of afternoons with my sketchbook, long bike rides (now that the weather is cooling down) and X-Files marathons. And hopefully another kitty to play with Maggie (but I still have to convince my partner on that, hehe).

What kind of advice would you give all the newbie illustrators out there, including me?
Work hard but don't forget to play.

A little note from me

Whether with watercolour or digital softwares, Julia's artwork seems to have a certain playful element to it. It invites us to look closer in a friendly tone and light heart. I love just how neat her colouring is, whatever material she uses. The colours she chooses always seem to be so soft and friendly to the eyes, not at all too challenging to look at, which adds up to the warm and friendly aesthetic her pieces seem to emanate. I also adore her ability to illustrate ladies in all shapes, sizes and colours looking effortlessly beautiful, like real women do. She has this amazing gift to make textures come alive without too many complicated and tedious details, which, I must say, isn't something everyone has. Although not shown here, she also has an apt for creating adorable patterns - as witnessed on her blog - as well as knitting patterns. A gal with many talents, that's what she is.

Midnight Feast

Yesterday one of my dearest and oldest friends, Gina, departed to Japan to pursue her Masters degree. I can't say that I'm not sad to know that she's not going to live a stone-throw away from me anymore. I also can't say that I'm not jealous that she's got this amazing opportunity to chase her dreams in our dream country. But what I can say is I am proud of her and she definitely deserves this. Last week our gang assembled at her house to have a bit of a farewell/till-we-meet-again party with cheese fondue and our must-have party food, takoyaki. At first, the plan was that we would sing karaoke and have lunch together as well but, in the end, we only managed to meet in the evening. It was already ten o'clock when we started preparing the dishes and it wasn't until midnight that we got to devour them. The night passed in the blink of an eye, it seems, as we shared secrets, woes and - obviously - laughter.

This outfit is something I was planning to wear for a full day of outing with my best friends. But, since the plan fell out, I didn't end up actually wearing it during the get-together. I did wear it to the grocery store to buy all the ingredients we needed to cook and again when I went back home. To be honest, the weather in Tangerang right now isn't quite suitable for a jacket and snug hat. But I thought the whole ensemble looked cool anyhow, so yeah. Sorry for the crease on the top, this was taken the next morning before Gina woke up, with me tiptoeing around her balcony and taking photos by myself. God, I hope none of the neighbours saw me. Also, I did wear shoes actually but it was left at the gate so I decided to go barefoot - which looks just as fitting. Gina, if you're reading this, I wish you the best of luck and wait for me!

5 Tips to Accomplish Your Goals

School is starting again and this year, once again, I'm joining the rest of society and going back to uni. It is always incredibly nerve-wracking, starting a new school year. Which is odd, considering how easy it was to ease from winter semester to summer semester. But, well, I guess it's always that feeling of starting something new and that scares me almost always. This year, it's happening again - a lot later than it should, no less. It's constantly terrifying. I'm trying so hard not to get my fear get to me and to focus on my goals. But, as you well know - if you ever have goals, that is easier said than done. That's why today, instead of worrying about things that may or may not happen, I'm just going to share with you some of my sure-fire methods in accomplishing goals.

Sometimes we want to do all these amazing things but we don't know where to start. Then we spend time listing all these things in our head until it becomes a jumble of wishes that makes no sense. Before we know it, it all becomes way too overwhelming and the day was over before we could even start. To prevent this, remember to always ALWAYS write down the things you want and need to do. Just start out by writing them from memory, in random order. After you've got them all on paper, determine which ones are most demanding, which are more pressing and which are the lightest. Once you've got your priorities straighten out, tackling them won't be as hard.

Several months ago, A Beautiful Mess posted about their three favourite ways to motivate themselves and get things done. It wasn't until then that it dawned on me that different people have different methods on how to finish their tasks. Personally, I'm a to-do list kind of gal and it's always proved to be very effective in helping me accomplish my goals. It makes tasks and errands quite fun. But that might not be what you like, so find out what your best method is. It can be rewards or group activities or even something we haven't thought of. Just try things out and see which is most effective for you. You still have a lifetime of goal-accomplishing to do so don't worry.

Despite the previous tip, sometimes you just feel out of it and too unmotivated to get on with things. Let's call it being selfish. We can, however, channel this selfishness into actually getting the job done. Here's how: think of your future self. No, I don't mean a what-will-you-be-like-in-ten-years thing. I mean, think of how big the task will be if you keep putting it off and letting it pile on. My stepmother keeps saying, "Whether you do it now or later, it'll still be your duty." So why not do it now, while you have the chance? Who knows what the future holds, right? What if in the immediate future, you're twice as exhausted with twice as many tasks? So do it now! You'll thank yourself later.

Everyone who's ever had success will tell you: "There is nothing like discipline." If there is something you take away from this post, I hope it's this tip: manage your time well. This means, you need to set a schedule. What time will you start work? What time will you have break? How much work should you get done before then? Etc. etc. If you work in an office, these schedules will most likely be set for you. But, outside of the office, you should know how to manage your own time for anything else that you need to get done. If you're working from home, this is pretty much a 24/7 necessity for you. Discipline helps you accomplish your goals more effectively and let you achieve more.

Many people tend to mistake this part. Don't be fooled! Taking a break is just as important as tackling your tasks and duties. There have been numbers of cases of people literally passing away because they overworked themselves and not giving their body, brain and heart the break they need. So, when you're doing tip #4 up there, schedule some breaks for yourself too. It can start from small breaks (i.e. lunch breaks, coffee breaks, etc.), medium breaks (i.e. an off-duty time, night sleep, nap) to actual big breaks (i.e. weekends, vacations, etc.). Just remember to still be strict with yourself and not get carried away by your breaks. Go back to work as soon as you're feeling much rested and rejuvenated. Balance in life is the most important thing.

These are all the tips that I have to share. As usual, if you guys have any more you'd like to add, I would love to hear them. Leave them in the comments down below and I'll read them - promise! I hope this has helped some - if not all - of you and let me know if you have any questions. Let's start afresh this autumn and hope you'll all have a terrific weekend!

黒クマ

 Shirokuma Café

September means the beginning of the school year for Uni students in this country. This year, I will be following the crowd and make my way to the lecture halls - figuratively speaking, of course. So does my friend Cynthia. The other day - specifically right after I shot these with Vina - Cynthia and I got together before she had to leave for Bandung. It's back to the books with us: a comeback for her and a re-beginning for me. But, essentially, we're taking a deep breath before taking the plunge. It was just one of those short hangouts filled with laughter, ice cream and a whole lot of inside jokes. At first I wasn't even sure whether I wanted to have some pictures taken for a post or not. But the ball started rolling and I just rolled with it. The location is actually しろくま at Gandaria City, which serves just the best parfaits. We both ordered them and they were incredible! These photos were actually taken after we finished and paid, shamelessly taking advantage of the cute surroundings. To all the waiters, waitresses and other guests there that day, we greatly appreciate your understanding toward our - my - shameless actions.

N.y.L.a top // C&A hat // vintage skirt + loafers // Ebay purse (Sis's) // "gifted" socks // photos by Cynthia

Yes, yes, I wore this outfit right away after that little photo session with Vina earlier that day. It was definitely more practical that way and, plus, I adore this skirt! It was earlier that morning when I tried it on and realised how much looser it feels now. This is a sure sign that my diet is working! So excited! I wanted to wear it with a baggy top and my tops don't get baggier than this. Personally, I love the laid-back feel the combo gives off. Then I saw that photo above with the bike, and realised how perfect this look would be for a maternity look. Not that I have one in the oven at the moment or anything - I don't, I swear. But my friend Kathy of My Peach Days and her adorable maternity looks just inspire me so much right now. I guess it also helps that I've always loved the baggy look on me - especially when I was a lot slimmer. Kathy, if you're reading this, I hope this inspires you a little. Not that you need my help on that front ;) How about you? Anything inspiring you right now?

August in Overview

Excited about...
Finally starting uni again! I'm a bit nervous of what that entails. It's scary going back a step and taking a U-turn to start all over again. However, it's a bit comforting to know that I'm not the only one. Some of my friends are doing the same as we speak. Whatever happens, I will (hopefully) do my best and make the best of these next few years - unlike last time. I will seize more opportunities than before and seek for more if none is luxuriously provided for me. So far, the experience has been quite enjoyable, although - not gonna lie - I keep comparing it with Germany. Obviously, it's not going to be the same. But I will do my best to get the most from this experience. Bismillah!

Currently reading...
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Something I've been meaning to read since high school but never got around to buying the book. Thankfully and evidently, my brother bought it for a school assignment back in tenth grade - but didn't tend to it rather well, it barely has covers anymore - and I got to read it just now. It's one of those books with the best first page and first sentence. The story comes absolutely full circle in a way you'd never imagine. Not too surprised how it won a Pulitzer - they always know to pick the best books! Quite recently, word got around that Harper Lee's publishing a new book soon. Honestly, cannot wait!

Currently watching...
The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Her. I didn't watch a lot of TV this month. Well, at least nothing new. But this movie was something that stuck to my mind. It became one of my must-see movies of 2015, mostly thanks to the intriguing trailer and James McAvoy. What I didn't expect was the three POVs presented, creating three different movies. I just happened to catch this one on HBO - although you should probably watch this version last - and still crossing my fingers that the other two POVs will also be played soon. Also, from the title, I expected it to be a little like Gone Girl but, apparently, it's more like Rabbit Hole. I must say, Jessica Chastain's acting is superb!

Listening to...
For you~月の光が降り注ぐテラス by 澤部椿(CV.佐倉綾音) [Translation: For  you~ Moonlight-Drenched Terrace by Sawabu Tsubaki (Voice Actress: Sakura Ayane)]. Over and over and over again. Found this song in my 四月は君の嘘 (April Was Your Lie) OST bundle. It's that scene where Tsubaki felt Kousei slipping away. I almost cried time and time again listening to this song. But I just can't stop hitting replay. It's that good and that heart-wrenching. Brb, buying new tissues.

Thinking about...
Bringing this blog in a different direction a.k.a. turning it into a more illustrative blog. I haven't decided if I'm ever going to stop posting outfits, though. But I would definitely like to post more drawings and illustrations I make. I go back and forth on the whole blogging thing every year so it's nothing to be alarmed about, I'm sure. Please let me know what you guys think. It would help me a lot in transitioning. Also, been thinking a lot about growing as an illustrator and a blogger, so let me know what you guys think on that front as well.

Other highlights:
This month I stop taking my medications! Woohoo! That means I get to live a free woman and never have to look back. I still have to live responsibly and take care of my physical condition, though. So far, thankfully, there's still no need for me to stay up all night - and hopefully there will never be - so I'm sticking with a looser bedtime. Eating is still not a problem, although I'm starting to doubt that the pills were appetite-enhancing. I think I'm just a fat girl at heart...Anyway, I'm announced healthy for now and I'm determined to keep it that way.

Meeting up with a new blogger friend // reunited with an old, crazy underclassman // loots from PopCon Asia // doing #fanartfriday whenever possible // girls' day/night out with Firu's family before Galuh splits // swapping styles with Divina // meeting up with Cynthia before the semester starts // a new thrifted piece from Delighfully Tacky just arrived! // Gina's farewell midnight feast and girl talk
